The rules in Ontario

When a holiday falls on a weekend: If a public holiday falls on a day you don’t normally work, your employer must give you a substitute day off with public holiday pay, or pay you public holiday pay for that day if you agree in writing.

  • The Civic Holiday in August is not a public holiday under the ESA, but many employers give it off.
  • Easter Monday, Remembrance Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are not public holidays in Ontario.
